TEIN RX1: Coilover Suspension with 16 Damping Levels
You're looking for a coilover suspension where you can adjust the vehicle height and damping to your driving needs? TEIN RX1 combines height adjustment through full-length adjustment with a twin-tube damper and 16 combined compression and rebound settings. The difference from a simple spring swap lies not only in adjustable height: you also replace the dampers and get a different tuning concept. This guide explains the functions, useful decision criteria, and installation preparation. Binding information about fitment and scope of delivery can be found with the individual product page.

What distinguishes TEIN RX1 from a simple spring swap?
When changing springs, existing dampers often remain in the vehicle. A coilover suspension goes further in the interaction of both components. The spring supports the vehicle load and, together with the installation situation, determines how much the suspension compresses under load. The damper influences the speed of this movement. Therefore, firmer damping neither replaces a suitable spring nor sufficient suspension travel. When selecting RX1, you should describe your goal as a combination of desired height, everyday use, and driving behavior.
One example: you want a slightly lower vehicle position but regularly drive on uneven country roads. Then the lowest setting is not automatically the most sensible. Important are clearance, usable suspension travel, and a setting that allows controlled driving on your actual routes. Start with a clear priority. Is it mainly about looks, replacing a worn suspension, or a more adjustable setup? These questions will also help you compare with TEIN FLEX Z.
Full-length adjustment: setting your ride height
RX1 belongs to the TEIN series with height adjustment through full-length adjustment. The effective length of the designated suspension component is changed via the lower mount. This differs from simply adjusting a spring perch. The separate adjustment options help to adapt the height within the specified range without necessarily changing the spring preload to the same degree. The design of the respective set and the installation instructions are decisive.
Vehicles with separately arranged spring and damper may have a different adjustment design than a strut. Therefore, a workshop should not infer all four wheel positions from a product photo. Before installation, check the allowable adjustment range, required minimum dimensions, and the position of the lock rings. The threaded section provides adjustment within defined limits. It is not a promise that every technically possible position in the vehicle is useful or permissible.
16 damping levels: what changes with a click?
The manual damping adjustment of the RX1 offers 16 levels. Compression and rebound stages are influenced together; there are not two independent controls. Compression acts when compressing, rebound when extending. Both processes play together during driving. The term “adjustable hardness” is often used but does not fully describe the technical effect: the damping characteristic is changed, not the spring rate.
The number of clicks is not a universal comfort measure. Eight clicks on another damper do not automatically mean the same driving behavior. Start with the manufacturer's default setting and document later changes. Change preferably only one setting at a time. If you change height, tire pressure, and damping simultaneously, it is hard to identify the cause of improvement or deterioration. Also, the same click setting is not necessarily prescribed for front and rear axles. Vehicle-specific notes take precedence.
Understanding twin-tube construction and H.B.S.
TEIN offers RX1 as a twin-tube system with Hydraulic Bump Stop, abbreviated H.B.S. In a twin-tube damper, working and compensating chambers are constructed with two tubes arranged inside each other. The damper processes movement via its hydraulic design. The principle alone does not determine how comfortable a specific vehicle drives. Among other factors, the specific tuning, springs, tires, and set vehicle height are crucial.
H.B.S. supplements the damping in the intended range near the end of compression travel. The system is meant to provide additional hydraulic effect there. It does not replace correct installation height and cannot arbitrarily compensate for missing suspension travel. Existing bump stops must not be changed or removed without explicit installation instructions. If a desired lowering causes frequent contact with bump stops, the overall setting must be checked. More damping is not a universal fix for unsuitable geometry.
Strut mounts and camber adjustment: pay attention to application
Strut mounts and adjustment options at the top mount are frequently discussed for coilover suspensions. These features are not identical for every vehicle application. Check in the RX1 product details which mounts are included, which original parts are retained, and whether camber adjustment is provided for the respective axle. An adjustable mount shown in a series image does not prove that exactly your set contains this component.
A changed height influences wheel alignment depending on axle design. Therefore, proper wheel alignment and clearance checks belong to installation planning. Consider the existing wheel-tire combination and possible wheel spacers. The required clearance between tire, strut, body, and lines must remain when steering and compressing. Such checks cannot be replaced by simply choosing the correct vehicle name in the shop.
Maintenance and later replacement
RX1 uses a sealed damper design. TEIN describes an exchange concept for this product family. You should distinguish this from a classic overhaul of the existing damper during your planning. Which replacement component is available depends on part number, version, and current offer. A general series description is therefore no binding promise about later availability, exchange costs, or processing times.
For ongoing operation, clean threaded areas and checking fasteners are important. Have maintenance performed according to manufacturer's instructions and use only suitable products. Document installed part numbers and the set height. This documentation is much more helpful than a description like “green TEIN suspension” in later questions. Also, noises should be specifically classified: when they occur, on which axle, and after which changes? Early professional inspection prevents a wrong setting going unnoticed for long.
Prepare your selection in the shop
Start with manufacturer, model, version, and production period. Add information about drive, body, and existing electronic suspension equipment. Then compare the TEIN part number and installation notes. If several series appear for your application, selection is not just about price. Compare adjustment concept, scope of delivery, and desired operation. For a replacement in an OE-style design with adjustable damping, EnduraPro PLUS might also be interesting; however, its concept does not correspond to the height adjustment of an RX1 coilover.
Besides parts price, also plan installation, possibly required wear parts, wheel alignment, and country-specific approvals. A listing in the shop does not automatically mean that every application is allowed for public road use without additional checks. Check documentation for the specific article before ordering. Information about payment can be found under Payment options, about delivery under Shipping Information.
Frequently Asked Questions about TEIN RX1
Can I adjust rebound and compression damping separately?
The RX1 damping adjustment affects both together across 16 levels. If you are looking for independent adjusters, you need to compare a product series designed for that. The mere number of clicks does not answer this question.
Is the lowest setting the best?
That depends on your goal and the specific application. Important are permissible dimensions, sufficient clearance, and a usable suspension travel. Do not set the height based only on a still photo.
What do I need for a targeted inquiry?
Provide the part number, your exact vehicle model, the year of manufacture, and relevant changes to wheels or suspension. With this information, an open question can be handled much more specifically. Use our contact form or write to info@tein-germany.com.
